🍽️HOW TO MAKE
This recipe is super easy to make, get your ingredients organized, and go ahead and chop up your apples. It’s so nice to just mix it all together with a spoon!
COOKING STEPS
Step 1
Whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, ginger, cinnamon, cloves and melted butter in a mixing bowl.
Step 2
Stir in sour cream, vanilla extract, diced apples and eggs. Add nuts. Spray a 9 x 9 baking pan with cooking spray. Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 35 to 40 minutes until center tests done. Makes about 12 servings.
Step 3 – Topping
Combine brown sugar, milk and butter in a pan on top of the stove. Bring to a boil, stirring often, and boil for 1 minute. Remove and stir in maple extract. Drizzle or spread over cake. Can add more milk if needed to keep frosting the spreading consistency you want.
We added the chopped nuts to the top of the cake, which we love the texture that gives but you can easily just fold the nuts into the batter!
⭐TIP
This frosting is one of our favorites, and you will love it too. As you can see from the directions, we only boil it for one minute. If you need to thin it some to get a better consistency to pour it over the cake, just add a little more milk.
RECIPE VARIATIONS
You could switch up the spices in this cake, by adding nutmeg or allspice if you wanted. You could also add a cream cheese frosting or just a basic powdered sugar glaze.
❓FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
We have never made it that way but I think it would work with a gluten free flour that is a 1:1 ratio.
No, you absolutely can’t taste the sour cream in the cake.
STORING CAKE
We just store this cake in an air-tight container and it will keep well for a few days. If it’s really moist and it’s hot out you may want to put it in the fridge as fruit can mold quickly.
