Tesla’s Cybertruck, which was delivered to its first buyers a couple of days ago, is set to transform into a functional boat, according to a recent tweet by Elon Musk. The Tesla CEO announced plans to offer a “mod package” that would enable the Cybertruck to traverse at least 100 meters of water, noting that upgrades to the cabin door seals are primarily needed. This announcement follows the commencement of Cybertruck deliveries on December 1st, 2023.

The idea of the Cybertruck having amphibious capabilities is not entirely new, as Musk had hinted at it as early as 2020; In response to a 3D artist’s rendering depicting the Cybertruck as a boat, Musk suggested that they could make it work. Over the years, Musk continued to tease the vehicle’s water-friendly features, stating that the Cybertruck would be “waterproof enough to serve briefly as a boat, so it can cross rivers, lakes, and even seas that aren’t too choppy.”
While Musk’s recent tweet provides more specific details, there is still some public skepticism, a common response to many of Musk’s statements. Despite this, enthusiasts have expressed excitement, creating renders and AI-generated images depicting the Cybertruck seamlessly navigating through water.
The announcement also brings to mind the Cybercat and Cybercat foiler, components designed to transform the Cybertruck into a high-performance amphibious catamaran:
It’s worth noting that Elon Musk’s statements often generate buzz and speculation, and while the idea of the Cybertruck doubling as a boat seems intriguing, practical implementation and regulatory considerations remain to be seen.
